Innovation meets health and wellness at Ovation Heartwood Preserve | Brand Ave. Studios

Technology enhances everyone’s lives, from the speed and ease of travel and shopping to the convenience of virtual appointments, meetings and staying in touch with family and friends.

For residents of Ovation Heartwood Preserve, the luxury community for active retirees set on the 500-acre former site of Boys Town, innovation and advances in health and wellness technologies are being employed so that residents will live longer and get more out of life.

“We not only embrace the latest research and technology,” says Stephanie Grade, Ovation’s General Manager in Omaha, “we also try to implement it in all facets of what we do.”

Residents who did not grow up as digital natives often have difficulty adapting to devices like handheld pads and smartphones. Here, however, intuitive, person-centered technology enables them to learn new skills, quickly and easily, that improve the quality of their lives.

At every level of accommodation at Ovation Heartwood Preserve – independent living, assisted living and memory care – smart devices and apps and high-tech amenities are giving residents increased mobility and opportunities for fitness and socialization. The latter is a key factor in maintaining a positive and healthy mindset.

“Smart apartments allow our residents to relax and feel safe in their homes by being able to adjust the lights, to adjust the thermostats or look to see the latest social events and educational offerings, all from the comfort of where they’re sitting,” Grade says. “This makes life easier for them while reducing their risk of falling.”

Technological innovations are also helping residents with daily tasks such as medication management and with functions like health and fitness biometrics. Free Wi-Fi throughout the community connects residents to staff in times of medical emergency and keeps them connected to friends, both those within Ovation Heartwood Preserve and those outside the community.

At the same time, low-tech, old-fashioned Dutch doors, which have a top half that opens while the bottom half stays closed, are currently being beta-tested at Ovation to determine whether they can give memory care residents a sense of freedom and inclusion they might not experience if confined to the indoors.

A key element in the design of the memory care building is circadian lighting, which mimics sunlight and resets humans’ natural internal clocks. Research has shown that long exposure to indoor artificial light can disrupt sleep and cause depression, disassociation and behavior problems. Outfitting apartments with circadian lights is improving sleep, mood and metabolic function.

Meanwhile, new features and functions are being added all the time. Although concierge service can arrange for rides to off-site doctor and physical therapy appointments, in the near future an on-site medical consultation room will allow residents to meet with a well-known local primary care physician.

Grade and the staff at Ovation Heartwood Preserve are dedicated to enhancing the health and wellness of all residents by ensuring that they stay active, stay connected and stay safe.

“It’s very important to us that we support our seniors by being innovative,” she says. “We want to make sure that they never feel unengaged! ”
